Freeman stays on as Homes England chair

Peter Freeman will serve another two years as chair of Homes England.

The Argent co-founder had been widely expected to stand down from the role after his term of office came to an end this month. He was first appointed to the role in 2020 for a three-year term, but will now serve until 22 October 2025.

Homes England chief executive Peter Denton said: “I’m very happy Peter is to continue as chair of Homes England for another term, leading an organisation equipped with a huge range of skills and expertise, but with a single laser focus on supporting local housing and regeneration visions to become a reality.

“His experience, leadership, and dedication is a huge asset for the agency, our partners, and the sector as we work together to build thriving places for communities across the country. I look forward to our continued collaboration as Peter embarks on his new term.”

The agency has progressively shifted from simply working to increase housing supply to becoming the government’s lead on regeneration projects, with its latest five-year strategic plan focusing far more on place-based initiatives.

It is planning to deliver £16bn of development by 2028, regenerating 9,000 hectares of land using a combination of CPO powers and masterplans.

As chair, Freeman is responsible for the proper running of the board, and guiding and influencing the agency at a strategic level, providing clear and consistent leadership, as well as acting as an ambassador for Homes England.

Freeman was recently appointed by levelling up secretary Michael Gove to chair the Cambridge Delivery Group, tasked with creating the “Silicon Valley of Europe” and delivering up to 250,000 homes.
