Freeport Leisure, the developer and operator of factory outlet shopping villages, announced today that it has teamed up with the Co-op to build a £20m shopping and leisure village at Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire.
The indoor shopping village, known as The Freeport Outlet Mall, will include 13,935 sq m (150,000 sq ft) of retail, with a Co-op food store as the anchor tenant. The Mall will be developed on the site of an existing Co-op hypermarket, located 10 minutes drive from Junction 16 of the M6.
The site has detailed planning permission for 16,164 sq m (174,500 sq ft) of retail including a 2,787 sq m (30,000 sq ft) supermarket.
Commenting on the joint venture, Freeport Leisure’s chief executive Sean Collidge said: “[This] is a first for Freeport in that it is our first joint venture and our first indoor shopping village. We are delighted to be associated with Norwest Co-op.”
He added: “The synergies between factory outlet villages and food stores have been clearly demonstrated at our own site at Fleetwood in Lancashire and at other centres around the country and I am confident that we can quickly establish this exciting new partnership as the premier shopping location in the Potteries.”
