French buy Brent town hall

The London borough of Brent has sold Brent Town Hall to the French Education Property Trust, which will convert it to a school.

Brent council began marketing the Grade II listed 90,000 sq ft art deco building last year ahead of a relocation to a new town hall in June 2013.

The redundant former town hall in Wembley Park will now be converted to a school.

A planning brief for the 5.3-acre site had proposed a range of alternative uses, including residential, hotel, healthcare and leisure and retail.

Brent council lead member for regeneration and major projects George Crane said: “We are set to leave behind a building that has been a civic home for more than 80 years to every important decision regarding our borough, where thousands have made their matrimonial vows and where many more have been declared British citizens.

“We have worked to ensure the future of the building has been secured and that the history, listed status and setting of the building is respected.

“It will make a fantastic space for FEPT, which will bring a new energy and life to the building through setting up a new school.”

Ambassador SEM Bernard Emié said: “I am particularly pleased with the choice of the French Education Property Trust to purchase Brent Town Hall.

“First of all, this historic building provides an ideal space and enjoys the perfect location to house our future school, which will enable us to increase the reception capacity of French secondary education in London.

“Indeed, the project is very eagerly awaited by the French community and all those who recognize the quality of French education in London.”

Colliers advised the London borough of Brent; Somers Property acted for FEPT.
