Marick Real Estate looks set to receive planning permission from Oxford City Council to redevelop a former Odeon cinema into a 145-bedroom aparthotel.
The proposals include demolishing the cinema building at 38-40 George Street, Oxford.
Oxford City Council owns the freehold to the site, on which Odeon decided not to renew its lease when it expired in September.
Historically, the site housed the Cinematograph Theatre (1912-1935) and the Chapel of St George the Martyr (1850-1935), both of which were demolished to make way for the Ritz Cinema, which opened in April 1936. In 2011, the cinema was taken over by ABC Cinemas (Odeon).
If approved, MRE is proposing to sign a 40-year lease lease with Wilde Aparthotels.
Wilde is the premium brand of Staycity, which operates similarly branded developments in Cambridge, London and Manchester.
The scheme would offer a mix of studios and one-bed aparthotel rooms over five floors. Each would have a fully equipped kitchen as well as space to eat and relax.
The aparthotel would also have a café, lounge, gym, laundry facilities and 24-hour reception.
The council will determine the application in a planning meeting later this week.
