Hammersmith and Fulham council has approved Fulham FC’s plans (pictured) to redevelop its Craven Cottage home into a £70m, 30,000-seat stadium.
The scheme, which has been dogged by fierce opposition from local residents, was backed by the council planning committee last week.
Michael Cartwright, the council’s deputy for environment, said: “It has not been a decision taken easily or indeed quickly. Because of the complexity of the site, with the river, Bishop’s Park and two sides of residential housing hemming it in, the plans have had to go through several revisions.”
Work on the stadium scheme is expected to complete in time for the 2003-2004 season.
