The government’s furlough scheme is to be extended until the end of October, chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced.
However, from the end of July the government will be asking employers to share the cost of paying people’s salaries.
This will enable workers to continue to receive the same level of support that they do now from August until the end of October, which is 80% of their salary, up to a maximum of £2,500 per month.
Employers currently using the scheme will also be able to bring furloughed employees back to work part-time.
Currently 7.5m people have been furloughed by businesses in the UK and Sunak added that there would be no changes to the scheme before the end of July and more details plans for the extension of the scheme would be released later in May.
“We stood behind Britain’s workers and businesses as we came into this crisis and we will stand behind them as we come through the other side,” Sunak told the House of Commons.
