Members of Manchester city council’s executive team are to be asked to approve a second compulsory purchase order on a major city centre development site.
The council is making another push to CPO the London Road Fire Station, after losing an expensive battle to purchase the site in 2011.
The Grade II listed building has been in the hands of Britannia Centre Limited since 1986 but it is yet to begin any redevelopment work.
In October, BCL was given the opportunity to enter into a agreement to develop the property as a hotel. A satisfactory response was not received by the council.
Through the CPO the council aims to bring about the swift regeneration of site through a development partnership to safeguard its future.
Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester city council, said: “The building’s owners have shown a reckless abandon in their management of what is an incredibly important, landmark property.”
He added: “This CPO is an unerring commitment on behalf of the city council to bring life back in to London Road Fire Station.”
