Garrard excludes himself from Blair peerage list

Sir David Garrard, who gave a £1m loan to the Labour party before the last general election, has asked to be removed from the list of Tony Blair’s nominees for a peerage.

Garrard, who also contributed £2.4m to one of the prime minister’s flagship city academies, is one of three businessmen at the centre of the furore surrounding the honours system.

Today, a spokesperson for Sir David said he thanked Mr Blair for the nomination, but had now “written to the prime minister asking for his name to be removed from the list of nominees”.
