The woman picked by London mayor Ken Livingstone to be his new deputy has vowed to fight his proposals to develop 90m sq ft of offices by 2016.
The Green Party’s Jenny Jones, who on Tuesday replaced Nicky Gavron in the £67,000 pa role this week, said she would “take advantage” of her independence to oppose Livingstone’s London Plan.
Jones said: “Ken Livingstone has promised that I will be completely independent, and I will take advantage of that.
“I want to develop an alternative strategy for the London Plan.
“It talks about building the equivalent of 75 Canary Wharfs, and I will oppose that.”
Gavron, Labour’s candidate to challenge Livingstone in next year’s mayoral elections, said: “I think that the mayor will find it quite difficult to promote that vision with a Green as his deputy, and we can’t afford any hiccups.”
