For more than six decades the purpose of the undistinguished, anonymous office building opposite St James’s Park Underground station has been kept top secret.
But now GCHQ, the UK’s signals intelligence agency, has revealed that the government has sold its central London headquarters to a property developer for an undisclosed sum likely to be worth tens of millions of pounds.
Despite speculation, the offices next to a Starbucks coffee shop on Palmer Street and a short walk from Whitehall and the Houses of Parliament have never been officially confirmed as one of GCHQ’s main sites.
