Gensler unveils 2050 City vision

Architect Gensler has unveiled the first of a series of visions for the future of the City of London as part of a major new exhibition.

Gensler’s 2050 vision for the Developing City exhibition is the first of three to be released by leading architects designed to illustrate how the capital’s financial district might look in the future.

Its designs incorporate a new global tech/media exchange, a life sciences exchange and an expanded cultural and residential community within the Barbican.

The City will have its own airport terminal, an uncovered and restored River Fleet and a comprehensive new subterranean transport and utility network.

Gensler staff hoped to reflect their take on the predicted evolution of the City as it becomes increasingly international and better connected.

Gensler London managing director Ian Mulcahey said: “Our dynamic vision highlights how the City of London continues to redefine and reinvent itself.

“It demonstrates how the gradual diversification of the world’s leading centre for finance and professional service firms continues apace and is complemented by the rapidly expanding tech media and life sciences industries.

“Not only will the predicted improvements and modernisation of transport systems and infrastructure facilitate wider changes in business, it will also lead to the creation of new public and cultural spaces, further enhancing the experience of locals and visitors for generations to come.”

The Developing City exhibition opens at the Walbrook Building, EC4, runs from 21 June to 9 September and will feature a series of seminars, talks, walks and exhibitions.
