Georgian property for sale on historic Cable Street

A property which overlooked London’s Battle of Cable Street 83 years ago is one of the 48 lots to be included in Strettons’ final auction of the year.

The Georgian property at 222-224 Cable Street, E1, lies just a stone’s throw from Gardiner’s Corner in Whitechapel where the main confrontation took place in 1936 when anti-fascist demonstrators forced back the march of Sir Oswald Mosley and his blackshirts.

Guided at ÂŁ925,000 plus, the vacant property comprises four self-contained two-bedroom flats arranged over four floors.

The auction will also include Haslington Hall, a fire-damaged Grade I listed country house dating from the 15th century and set in 14 acres of land.

With a guide price of just £250,000, the property, located near Crewe in Cheshire, comes with three ancillary buildings – including stables and a building used as an office – and its own lake.

Strettons initially sold the property after its July auction for an undisclosed amount but it has since returned to the market.

The auction is due to take place on Thursday 12 December at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, WC2, as the nation goes to the polls to vote in the general election.

“There has been hesitancy in the room for many auction houses throughout the year, so maybe a deadline of an election and a potential change of government will create some urgency,” said Strettons auction director Andrew Brown.
