German operator to run £500m Magor park

The consortium proposing to build a £500m covered theme park at Magor in South Wales formally unveiled its plans this week.

Legend Court – a company headed by former St Martins Property chief Brian Cann – said the 324ha (800 acre) park would be run by Mack. The private German operator runs Europark in Hanover, home to Germany’s biggest leisure attraction.

The park’s promoters claim it will be the world’s largest covered resort, attract 2.7m visitors a year and include films studios, festival shopping, hotels and a convention centre as well as rides.

The other owners of Legend are two directors of Bristol-based project manager and building services engineer Torpy Group. Quoted property and leisure company BS Group is one of the consultants.

Colin Warfield, Legend’s deputy chairman, said the company was talking to a major funder which will bring both debt and equity to the project, but refused to name names.

The scheme does not have consent and is likely to go to planning inquiry. Legend said it intended to make an outline application to Newport and Monmouth councils by the end of April.
