Proposals for a Tata gigafactory in Somerset have reignited investors’ interest in another potential British battery facility in Coventry.
Andy Street, mayor of the West Midlands, said talks were taking place with international investors to develop the Coventry site after reports in May suggested Tata, the Indian company that owns Jaguar Land Rover, had chosen a site in Somerset for a so-called gigafactory.
The new electric vehicle battery plant, which would be near Bridgwater, has yet to be confirmed by Tata, but “the mere rumour of it has poked the market”, according to Street.
Outline plans for a 6m sq ft facility at Coventry airport were approved last year.
