Giraffe sale to Tesco sealed

Tesco has spent £48.6m on buying the Giraffe restaurant chain from Risk Capital Partners and 3i.

Giraffe opened four new sites in the last financial year to 25 March, in Bath, Chelmsford, the Meadowhall centre, in Sheffield, and Westfield’s Stratford City development, in east London to take it to nearly 48 outlets. Tesco will open restaurants at up to 150 of its stores, about 10 of them this year. It will also look, “where possible”, to open restaurants next to its supermarkets. The Daily Telegraph’s Comment & analysis says Tesco is coming up with new ideas to try to attract people to its supermarkets because of a new era of bricks-and-mortar grocery retailing saturation.
