Historic Royal Palaces has joined the opposition to a scheme proposed by Network Rail and Gladedale to erect five-storey buildings including 130 homes, offices, shops and a hotel near Hampton Court Palace.
Objectors say it would desecrate the sweeping view of Henry VIII’s former residence from the railway station.
Gladedale said the site had been earmarked for development in local plans but the proposals were being reviewed in the light of public consultation which, it said, had been largely supportive.
Elmbridge Council said the site had been “ripe for development and improvement for a number of years”.
