Glasgow approves 2030 city centre regen strategy

Glasgow City Council has approved plans to completely transform the city centre between 2024 and 2030.

The City Centre Strategy 2024-30 will see Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Centre undergo a complete overhaul to create new retail and leisure destinations, while George Square will be revamped with a greening programme.

Sauchiehall Precinct and Argyle Street are also set to undergo a transformation in 2024 as part of the Avenues Programme, a scheme to create attractive and people-focused places.

The strategy outlines billions of pounds of further developments over the coming years. It will be overseen by the City Centre Task Force, which is co-chaired by Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and Angus Millar, Glasgow’s convener for climate, Glasgow green deal, transport and city centre recovery. It will have input from the public and private sector.

Since 2019, Glasgow city centre has received more than £200m of public sector investment. About £120m has already been committed to ongoing projects that will span the duration of the new strategy.

Over the past few years, almost £1bn has been invested in developments in the city, including Candleriggs Square, the Barclays campus in Tradeston, the Love Loan development on George Street, JPMorgan Chase at Argyle Street and the major new Moda residential complex at the former Strathclyde Police headquarters on Pitt Street.

Patrick said: “As part of the City Centre Task Force, it is encouraging to see projects such as the Golden Z review, the avenues project and our recommendations on empty units all taken forward as part of this refreshed strategy.

“Private investment will be critical to turning around the fortunes of our city centre and we want to attract even more projects like those currently under development such as the Love Loan building, Candleriggs Square and the JP Morgan office development.”
