Glasgow distiller plans to redevelop Leith site as homes

Glasgow-based whisky group Whyte & Mackay is understood to be drawing up plans for the redevelopment of its bottling plant at Leith near Edinburgh as a residential scheme.

Whyte & Mackay is negotiating with the Scottish Executive for grant assistance for its proposals.

Speculation has surrounded plans by the spirits group’s (formerly known as Kyndal) to consolidate its bottling operation for the past couple of months.

Whyte & Mackay is building a new £20m bottling facility near its existing Grangemouth plant. The new scheme is due to be completed in 2005.

The move is part of a restructuring programme announced at the beginning of August by Vivian Imerman, Whyte & Mackay’s chief executive and majority owner.
