Nikal and David McLean have gained consent for their £150m mixed-use Altair development in the centre of Altrincham, Greater Manchester.

The Ian Simpson Architects-designed scheme comprises 161,000 sq ft of retail and leisure, 53,000 sq ft of offices, a 135-bed luxury hotel, two new public squares an “extreme sports” centre and an ice rink.

David McLean Nikal, a joint venture specifically established for the scheme, was selected as development partner for the site by Trafford council in 2004.

Nick Payne, managing director at Nikal, said: “The success of this development shows that the benefits of regeneration don’t have to be restricted to city centres. We need look no further than Manchester city centre to see how development projects can breathe new life into business, residential and commercial districts.”
