Urbo Regeneration, a joint venture between Bolsterstone Group, Arnold Laver Group and AGD Regeneration, has won outline consent for the initial infrastructure phase of its £300m redevelopment of Chesterfield’s Waterside district in Derbyshire.
The first phase covers the creation of a 12,900 sq ft canal basin, which will form the terminus to the restored Chesterfield canal network, as well as the creation of a new lock.
The canal basin forms the centerpiece of a wider proposed mixed-use, waterside neighbourhood comprising around 1300 homes with retail and commercial space, hotels, a public square, an eco-park and other public spaces.
Located close to the A61 on the edge of Chesterfield town centre, plans for the 40-acre brownfield site are being delivered in partnership with Chesterfield council.
Martin Stockley Associates provided the designs for the canal basin and the planning application was co-ordinated by How Planning.
A planning application for the rest of the scheme will be submitted late 2008.
Work is due to start on site for the first phase in October and will be completed by March 2009.
Andy Dainty, a director of Urbo said: “This important first milestone for Chesterfield Waterside signifies the imminent start on site for this development. The canal works will immediately improve the area and create confidence in the wider project which will be delivered over the coming years.”
The Chesterfield Canal once reached 46 miles from the River Trent to Chesterfield. To date 37 miles have been restored to full use.
EDAW was appointed in June to masterplan the project. The development will be delivered by Urbo both directly and in partnership with other sub-developers to ensure a mixed approach to design and delivery.
