Go-ahead given for Canary Wharf redevelopment

A major redesign of 30 South Colonnade, E14, has been given the green light, in a move that will see the Canary Wharf landmark named YY London.

The renamed building will provide 408,000 sq ft of offices behind a new façade, plus a café, restaurant and shops, an extensive rooftop garden and a triple-height ground-floor space with two prominent entrances. The name YY London is a reference to the shape of the new façade.

The building was acquired by Quadrant off-market in May 2019. Quadrant is developing the scheme in a joint venture with funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management. The partners said the decision to revamp rather than demolish the building would save an estimated 10,260 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The scheme has been designed by BuckleyGrayYeoman. Knight Frank and CBRE are joint leasing agents.

News of the redevelopment comes as many firms reconsider the extent to which they will use existing office space in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Quadrant partner Julian Neave said that as a result of the rethink, “we need our offices to be extraordinary spaces”.

“YY London will be a beautiful and recognisable building for London, set in a contemporary tone at the heart of this renowned business district,” he said. “It has excellent London-wide connections, located adjacent to the Jubilee Line and DLR and a short walk from the upcoming Elizabeth Line.”
