Staff at Google who choose to work permanently from home will have their pay cut.
The tech giant has launched an internal tool so that staff can calculate the impact on their pay if they opt to not return to the office.
The algorithm, based on location, has been criticised for penalising those who had previously endured long commutes, while not cutting the pay of those who live near to the office but stay at home.
The drive echoes Morgan Stanley chief chief executive James Gorman, who told staff: “If you want to earn New York rates, you work in New York.”
Google said 10,000 people had asked to work from home since it launched the calculator.
