Gove shake up won’t fix property crisis, says housing boss

MJ Gleeson boss Graham Prothero has warned that secretary of state Michael Gove’s plans to overhaul the planning system “won’t touch the surface” when it comes to solving the housing crisis.

The housebuilder, which released its financial results yesterday, said the interventions announced by Gove to allow more PDR and to push through planning on brownfield sites, were not enough to reverse the decline in housebuilding since mandatory housing targets were dropped.

Pretax profit at MJ Gleeson fell by more than half to £7.2m in the six months to 31 December, with its delivery of homes falling from 900 in 2022 to 700 last year.
