Gove to meet rebels over planning reforms

Michael Gove will meet with Conservative rebels to discuss reform of the planning system.

The new housing secretary has paused Robert Jenrick’s overhaul, and will instead listen to backbenchers concerned about over-development.

Jenrick was poised to announce a watered-down set of planning reforms before he was sacked in the cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday.

Gove has agreed to meet the 100 members of a WhatsApp group of housing rebels, which includes several ministers.

It is hoped within the party that Gove will be able to strike a compromise and avoid more voters leaving the Conservatives in previously safe seats, as happened when it lost the Chesham & Amersham by-election the the Liberal Democrats in June.
