Government backs Vermont’s £100m Liverpool scheme

Vermont Developments and Ethel Austin Property Group’s £100m Sefton Street Quarter development in Liverpool has been rubberstamped by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

The project was referred as it required a change of land use from purely employment.

It proposes a 22-storey apartment tower and hotel, family homes, 30,000 sq ft of offices, leisure and shops and public realm areas on a two-acre site at the junction of Parliament Street and Sefton Street

Mark Connon, chief executive of Vermont Development, said: “We are delighted the DCLG has ratified the decision of Liverpool council’s planning department which was a culmination of an extensive and constructive dialogue with all parties to ensure the scheme was right for Liverpool.”

Vermont has also received planning permission for a 96-bed hotel in the former Ribble Building in Lord Street, Southport.

The project will see the refurbishment of the existing six storey building, which will contain 16 luxury suites, with the remaining rooms featured in a new build extension on the rear of the property.

Work is expected to be completed in time for the British Open’s appearance at Royal Birkdale in 2008.
