Rebel Conservative MPs, including two former prime ministers, say they will defeat the government over an amendment to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill.
At least 30 Tory MPs, including Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, are backing an amendment, submitted by former levelling up secretary Simon Clarke, that would force the government to end the ban on new on-shore wind farms.
Labour has said it will back the amendment, meaning only five more Conservative MPs need to rebel to wipe out the government’s majority.
Former Conservative Party chair Sir Jake Berry announced he was supporting the amendment at the weekend, as did COP6 president and former business secretary Alok Sharma.
Votes on the Bill were postponed last week following a separate rebellion over housing targets and planning reform, spearheaded by former environment secretary Theresa Villiers.
Levelling-up secretary Michael Gove intends to bring the Bill back to the Commons before Christmas.
