Government making housing crisis worse, says Churchill chair

The government is making the housing crisis worse, according to the chair of Churchill Retirement Living.

Spencer McCarthy said the over-60s homes developer had been hindered by the government’s “persistently negative stance” towards the sector.

“The impact of new national policies on our planning applications and the overall housing market cannot be overestimated,” he said.

“The government needs to recognise that its policies are exacerbating the housing crisis and take immediate action to address this situation.”

He estimates that new energy efficiency rules introduced in June, known as Part L building regulations, will add £6,000 to the cost of building each of its apartments. There were also “unprecedented challenges in the planning system”, he said.

Over the past year Churchill has had 12 of its planning applications go to appeal, 10 of which it overturned.
