Government moves to take stake in Sizewell C

The government has confirmed plans to take a “special share” in the £20bn Sizewell C nuclear plant.

The equity stake is being talked about as it moves closer to a deal that would see taxpayers invest 20% in the project to end China’s involvement.

Ministers committed £100m to the Suffolk development in January, which may be converted to equity if the plant goes ahead. They remain in talks with EDF over a deal to fund construction via regulated levies on household energy bills and a bigger, multibillion-pound taxpayer investment.
