The government is weighing up the case for green taxes as a means ofprotecting the environment.
Michael Meacher, the environment minister, said the Chancellor wasconsidering this type of tax for inclusion in the March Budget.
A green tax could work by, for example, charging for green beltdevelopment. The money raised could be used to decontaminate urbansites, erase dereliction and boost new housing development on brownfieldsites.
