The government has unveiled a transport policy which is emphasisingpublic transport at the expense of the car.
John Prescott, the deputy Prime Minister, has announced a range ofpossible measures to entice drivers from their cars including road tollsand higher parking charges. Other options in a consultation paperinclude; creating an orbital railway for central London, a campaign toshift freight from roads to rail and a return to the regulation of buses.
A White Paper with more concrete proposals will be delivered in March.
