Government to miss 1m homes target

The government will miss its 2020 target of building a million homes by at least a quarter, according to a report commissioned by housing charity Shelter.

A slowdown in the number of homes being built following the vote to leave the European Union will mean there will be 266,000 fewer homes built than the government had promised.

Capital Economics is forecasting an 8% fall in the number of homes being built over the next year. A continuation of that trend would mean fewer homes would be built in 2020 than before the financial crisis in 2008.
