The government will spend a record £6 billion over a six-year period to improve local road infrastructure, including repairing an estimated 18 million potholes.
The government has said the long-term nature of the funding will allow local authorities to plan their spending better, with Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin saying it would put an end to short-term fixes. Local authorities, meanwhile, said the amount fell short of what was needed to repair “poor quality” roads.
Some £850 million of the total will go to the southwest; the northeast, in contrast, will receive £270 million.
