Govt launches ‘express lanes’ plan for M25

Plans for “express lanes” along the most congested part of the M25 were launched by the government today.

The government wants to introduce fast lanes between junctions 12 and 15 near Heathrow airport as soon as possible.

Only vehicles carrying at least two occupants will be allowed to use the lanes.

The scheme is based on “car pool lanes” in the US.

However, the RAC Foundation has said the western section of the M25 is not the best place for the trial as car sharing works best between high-density housing areas and business parks where people naturally share journeys.

The AA Motoring Trust said some car pool lanes in the US had eventually been turned into toll roads because not enough drivers used them.
