Govt launches Right to Buy pilot for housing association tenants

The government has launched its voluntary Right to Buy pilot for housing association tenants in the West Midlands.

£200m has been allocated to discount the homes for sale to tenants. Places will be allocated via ballot to ensure fairness.

Money from the discounted sales will then be used to fund replacement homes.

Extending Right to Buy to housing association tenants was a manifesto pledge from the Conservatives in the 2015 election. Since then there has been extensive consultation, with a pilot scheme running in 2016 with five housing associations.

The Midlands pilot follows the launch this week of the social housing green paper.

Communities secretary James Brokenshire said: ”This government is committed to providing opportunities for people to get a foot on the property ladder and to have a place they can call their own.”

The pilot will run until spring 2020 and the government will assess its impact before deciding on the next steps for the policy.
