Granada has leased a 5,574 sq m (60,000 sq ft) property next to the new Scottish parliament for the construction of a new 157-room hotel.
The freehold property in the Scottish capital’s Old Town was bought in April 1998 by Silver Fern (St Mary’s), which beating several bidders which included Granada.
The hotel will be called Travelodge Edinburgh Central, with conversion works expected to be completed in November.
Granada development director Kevin Jackson commented: “We like to think that we do a good job in securing the best property available for our hotels and were keen to get this site due to its outstanding location.”
Silver Fern is a joint venture between Bob Brisker of Silver Fern Trading, Peter Hutchison of Areacentre, James Manclark of Knowe Properties and Jim Pike of JLP Development Consultancy.
There has been controversy surrounding the location of the new Scottish Parliament in recent weeks with SNP and Liberal Democrat SMPs calling for the a review of plans to move the legislature from the Church of Scotland Assembly Hall to a purpose-built building at Holyrood. The Scottish parliament is expected to debate the matter in the next month.
