Graphics workstation

Regular readers will know how much I love acronyms. Well, Intergraph have just sent me a press release containing: RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer); MIPS (Millions of Instructions Per Second); EDGE (Extensible Display Geometry Engine); CAD, CAM and CAE (Computer-aided Design, Manufacture and Engineering, respectively). Now I can write about Intergraph’s new product (see above).

Intergraph claim to be the world’s largest company developing and manufacturing interactive computer graphics systems for CAD/CAM/CAE and digital mapping. They now have a new generation of medium- to high-performance RISC-based UNIX workstations — the 6000 Series. These, it is claimed, provide a new standard of price/performance at the 10 and 14 MIPS performance levels.

The new workstations introduce Intergraph’s EDGE — a high-performance graphics processor providing up to 350,000 3D vectors per second and 16 m simultaneous colours.

Details from Neil McLeod, Intergraph (UK) Ltd, Delta Business Park, Great Western Way, Swindon SN5 7XP (0793 619999).
