Great British Railways plan cancelled by Downing Street

Plans to create a new body to run Britain’s rail network have been scrapped by Number 10.

The creation of Great British Railways had been put forward by Boris Johnson as a way to fix the systemic problems in the UK’s rail infrastructure. But officials at the Department for Transport have now been told this is not a priority and there will be no room for the legislation in the King’s Speech.

“Those working on it have been told it’s now unlikely to get a legislative slot,” a source said. “Without it they won’t be able to fully create the body, as it requires primary legislation.”
