Great Resignation gathers pace as demand for flex grows

The “Great Resignation” sweeping Britain gathered pace over the summer with a record number of employees quitting their jobs amid a post-Covid surge in demand for flexible working.

More than 1m people moved from one job to another in the three months to September, according to official figures.

An all-time high of 400,000 resigned from their jobs. A further 64,000 were dismissed, while the rest were either at the end of a temporary contract or declined to say.

Some 1m people who were not previously working found employment, while vacancies rose to a new record of 1.3m last month, suggesting a heating up in the race for talent.
