Green light for £300m Ebbw Vale scheme

A £300m regeneration scheme at the former Ebbw Vale steelworks in Blaenau Gwent, Wales, has been given the green light by planners.

A masterplan for The Works, a 10-year project to include 1m sq ft of commercial space and 720 homes on the 185-acre site, was approved by the Welsh Assembly today.

The first phase of land earmarked for residential development will be marketed by Savills, development consultants to the site, in the autumn.

Economy and transport minister Ieuan Wyn Jones praised the speed of progress at the former steelworks, which closed in 2002, and said the project would have a “profound impact” on revitalising the region.

He said: “The speed with which the site is being brought to market is commendable and an outstanding example of public and private sector organisations working together to bring new life to Ebbw Vale and regenerate a community.

“It will be an exemplar project embracing sustainable development principles and best practice in environmental planning and implementation and will significantly improve the quality of life for the local communities and attract new investment.”
