Urban Splash and Birmingham Mailbox have been given outline planning consent for their £42m Fort Dunlop scheme on the M6 in Birmingham.
Urban Box, an Urban Splash/Birmingham Mailbox joint venture, plans workspace, shops, flats, leisure, a hotel and a car showroom at the site, a derelict former Dunlop tyre factory.
A Birmingham council spokesman said that the idea was to give outline consent to a wide range of options, “to allow flexibility”.
In September 2001, Urban Box had to reduce the retail element of the 350,000 sq ft (32,515 sq m) scheme from 135,000 sq ft (12,542 sq m) to around 27,000 sq ft (2,508 sq m).
It is understood that Urban Box wants to develop 310,000 sq ft (28,800 sq m) of offices, while devoting the rest of the scheme to ancillary shops and leisure.
