Green light for British Land’s Bishopsgate tower

British Land’s 32-storey tower at 2-3 Finsbury Avenue Square, EC2, has been given the green light.

Twenty two of the members of the City of London Corporation’s planning and transportation committee voted in favour, with one abstaining.

Robert Samuel, head of office development at British Land, welcomed the decision, saying: “It has a diversity of uses, responding to evolving occupier needs and provides a unique blend of public spaces, restaurants and shops linking the northern City to Shoreditch and Tech City.”

Chris Hayward, chairman of the committee, said: “I believe that it will play an important part in continuing the City’s growth and increasing London’s attraction as the world’s leading financial centre.”

Designed by Arup Associates, the tower would comprise 550,000 sq ft of offices across four elements, the tallest of which would rise to 32 storeys.

The proposals include a new route and double-height arcade of shops linking Finsbury Avenue Square with Sun Street and Old Street.

A public restaurant, café and roof terrace at level 14 accessed via scenic lifts from Finsbury Avenue Square and a flexible conference and event space with panoramic views across London are also included in the plans.

The plans had been recommended for approval by the City of London Corporation’s chief executive and town clerk last week.
