Plans for HSBC’s new Birmingham headquarters building have been given the green light.
Council planners have approved proposals for the 11-storey, 210,000 sq ft Two Arena Central office block, which forms a key part of the first phase of development at the £400m Arena Central project.
The Make Architects-designed building will house HSBC’s UK ring-fenced bank, serving personal and business customers, and will front on to Broad Street and Centenary Square, next to the former Birmingham Municipal Bank building.
The letting is the largest property deal in the city since 2002 and the bank has agreed a 250-year lease.
The decision comes days after HSBC confirmed it will house 2,200 staff within the 210,000 sq ft building, relocating half of this figure from its HQ at 8 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, E14.
Arena Central is being delivered by ACDL, a joint venture between Miller Developments and Pro Vinci Asset Management. Plans include 1m sq ft of mixed-use space built in phases on the 9.2-acre site.
Work is due start on site in July, with practical completion expected for mid-2017 for occupation in early 2018.
