Manhattan Loft Corporation (MLC) and London Continental Railways have got the go-ahead for the £150m redevelopment of the listed hotel at St Pancras Station in central London.
The 323,000 sq ft Gothic Revival building, originally known as St Pancras Chambers, will be refurbished to create:
- A five-star, 245-bed hotel with two restaurants operated by Whitbread’s Marriott hotels
- Two bars
- A health and leisure centre
- A ballroom
- 20 meeting and function rooms
- 68 flats
Harry Handelsman, CEO of MLC, said: “St Pancras Chambers is the biggest challenge that MLC has had over the last 13 years.
“This magnificent building with all its intricate features will, on its completion in 2008, be the most exciting residential development and hotel in London and the catalyst for the regeneration of King’s Cross.”
The Grade 1 listed building was designed and built between 1868 and 1876 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, and operated as a hotel until 1935.
After that it was used as offices by British Railways until the early 1980s, since when it has remained vacant.
MLC plans to start work on site in January next year and anticipates that the project will complete in 2008.
The architects are RHWL and Richard Griffiths Architects.
