Greenery in cities is not necessarily a good thing, according to a recently published book.
The City of Today is a Dying Thing, by social sciences professor Des Fitzgerald, upends the consensus view that cities make us ill, and if only we had more trees everything would be better.
Instead, he says, the concept of the “garden city” has proven to be magical thinking, and where planners see green landscapes, Fitzgerald sniffs out hints of fascism, Fordism, eugenics and exclusion.
