Greenwich Council has approved 1,750 homes at Peabody and Berkeley Homes’ Plumstead development in West Thamesmead, SE28.
The joint developers lodged plans last year for the 18-acre site, which was previously home to Arsenal Football Club.
The hybrid application includes outline plans for four parcels of land at Griffin Manor Way, PlasRecycle, Highway Land and Pettman Crescent. It is the largest site within the Abbey Wood, Thamesmead and Plumstead housing zone.
It includes plans for 915 homes across buildings of up to 11 storeys, with 835 reserved for future applications. There are also detailed plans for a new access to the neighbouring HMP Thameside and Belmarsh prisons.
The regeneration is one of many large developments around the capital from housing association Peabody. It is also developing around 1,950 at the Lesnes Estate, nearly 1,000 home at Holloway Prison and is buying 42 acres at the former Ford Dagenham plant for a 3,200-home development.
Peabody selected Berkeley Homes as its preferred development partner in 2017. The duo lodged an EIA in 2018, superseding plans for a smaller scheme. The site was home to Woolwich Arsenal’s Manor Ground stadium from 1893-1913, before it moved to Highbury in Islington.
