Greenwich mega-regen approved

Plans for Greenwich Peninsula, the largest regeneration project in London so far, have been given the go-ahead by the London borough of Greenwich.

Knight Dragon has submitted plans that will create 15,720 homes and 12,000 jobs, creating a community for 28,000 people that will be twice the size of Soho. Some 3,030 of the homes will be affordable, while the scheme will provide £500m of investment in public and social infrastructure.

The 150-acre scheme, with a GDV of £8.4bn, will also include two schools, retail and leisure facilities and substantial redevelopment of the public realm, including 1.6 miles of river frontage.

The scheme was initially consented in 2004 on a smaller scale.

Sammy Lee, vice chairman of Knight Dragon, said: “It’s a huge project and a huge responsibility. Something like this happens only once in a generation in London. We have big plans for the Peninsula as well as the team, the determination and the finance to deliver them.”

The masterplan for Greenwich Peninsula has been designed by Allies & Morrison.

Richard Blakeway, deputy mayor for housing at the GLA, said: “This transformation of what was a disused site will not only provide thousands of much-needed new homes for Londoners, but also bring jobs as part of the wider regeneration of this key opportunity area.”

Construction has already started on the first 3,000 homes, with 700 homes completing this autumn.
