The London Borough of Greenwich has submitted plans for a £45m civic office scheme in Woolwich.
The 25,000 sq ft project, designed by HLM Architects, includes community facilities comprising a reception, public library, local services centre, business centre and community gallery.
The project, to be located on Wellington Street, forms the initial stage of a masterplan to regenerate an 8-acre town centre site in Woolwich.
Details of the masterplan, submitted for planning, reveal a large mixed-use project including a retail store for Tesco, and approximately 900 new homes.
The office project is a pathfinder scheme, which responds to the Government’s strategies to drive the ‘joined-up’ delivery of public services, with improved efficiency in the utilisation of space, operations and working practices.
David Cafferty, Director at HLM Architects, added: “In our discussions with CABE and GLA we have committed that as a pathfinder scheme, the project would excel not just in visual quality and sustainability credentials but also in terms of its operational effectiveness.
“We have worked closely throughout the design stages with Project Engineers, Hilson Moran and Buro Happold to achieve excellence in this respect.”
Richard O’Neil, Director at HLM Architects, said: “This new Civic development will represent a centre of excellence, a benchmark for future urban context developments embracing Government initiative and supporting local authorities in rationalising and consolidating their operational assets.
“The new building will further improve the provision of community services, whilst adding to an integrated masterplan generated to encourage social integration and cohesion.”
