Steak-bake seller Greggs has said it is on track to open 150 shops this year as it heads towards its “significantly more than 3,000 shops” target.
Greggs said it would target retail parks, railway stations, airports, roadsides and supermarkets, where it felt it was underrepresented.
The sausage roll retailer opened 94 new shops in the first half of 2023, but made 44 closures. Most of these were due to repositioning to larger premises in stronger locations. It currently has 2,378 shops trading.
Greggs said a “strong pipeline of good opportunities” meant that it was confident of opening a net 150 new shops in 2023.
The company made total sales of £844m over the 26-week period, an increase of 21.5% on the £694.5m for H1 2022.
Roisin Currie, chief executive, said: “Our assessment of catchments across the UK continues to support our ambition to have significantly more than 3,000 shops in the Greggs estate. Our confidence in this opportunity is underpinned by recent success in catchments where Greggs is underrepresented such as retail parks, railway stations, airports, roadsides and supermarkets.”
Greggs now has shops trading in Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s supermarkets, with plans for further development.
