Families of the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster have called a government apology “deeply offensive”.
The housing department was “deeply sorry for its past failures” in overseeing the building control system for tall blocks, its QC told the inquiry into the disaster yesterday.
Jason Beer QC said its trust in the construction industry had been “misplaced and abused”, adding that, if government regulations and guidance had been followed, “a large-scale cladding fire could not have happened”.
Grenfell United, which represents survivors and bereaved families, said the government’s statement was “a disingenuous attempt to carry on their masquerade of innocence”, adding: “We know government knew about the deadly materials and the consequences but covered up the risks.”
Lawyers for the bereaved families and survivors argued on Monday that the disaster was the result of a lengthy government cover-up.
