Grimshaw appointed lead architects for Stoke bus station

Grimshaw Architects, designer of Cornwall’s Eden Project, has been appointed as the lead architect for a new bus station in Stoke-on-Trent, which will form the first phase of Realis Estates £275m redevelopment of the outdated shopping centre – the East West Centre.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council planners have unanimously backed the architect’s designs and have also revealed that subject to prelets being placed, work will start on site in nine months time on March 28, 2011.

Grimshaw will now complete the detailed designs for the new bus station, prior to a planning application being submitted in November.

Richard Blackwell, associate for Grimshaw said: “We aim to deliver an elegant, simple building of enduring quality and are confident that the project will play a significant role in shaping the on-going redevelopment of Stoke-on-Trent.”

The East West development will transform the site of the existing East West Centre into a 650,000 sq ft shopping scheme that will include a new department store, a wide range of new shops, cafes, restaurants, vibrant public spaces, a multi screen cinema, new hotel and a modern new transport interchange and improved parking.

The whole scheme won outline consent in 2009.
